CANDICE VAN HALTREN – STYLIST
Describe what you do:
Provide wardrobe solutions and looks for models, depending on the concept.
How long have you been a stylist?
Several years after studying in 2009 a diploma of professional styling.
Who is the stylist or artist that has influenced your work the most?
I have a few Perth locals who I really admire and have assisted. I also love fashion icons such as Anna Dello Russo, Monica Rose, Blake Lively who famously styled herself in Gossip girl.
What motivates you?
I am always so energised while styling photoshoots, I often find motivation through inspiring concepts and get really excited about it!
What is the hardest thing about being a stylist/designer?
Returns and damage to garments!! A worst nightmare, building relationships with retailers and designers is so important.
How do you overcome this?
Communication with the rest of the team about taking care.
What is the best thing?
How would you describe your work?
Progressive, creative, always wanting to improve, so a work in progress!
What is your career highlight thus far?
I have been published in a few places that was definitely a highlight – otherwise hear great and positive feedback from peers and mentors.
Thankfully, nothing dreadful so far, although I once had my car break down (twice) while shooting a good hour and a half away from home up in the hills!! The shoot still went ahead but getting my car towed home at the end of the day was a bummer!
Finish these sentences:
Life is awesome when…I’m doing what I love (thankfully this is most of the time!)
I would like to die…when I see people wearing tragic fashion outfits.
When the shit hits the fan…I need a strong coffee and a few girlfriends to vent with.
I am inspired by… fashion blogs, websites and new collections being shown on the runway!
Creativity is… Something you need to practice and explore, sometimes failing.
Who is your favourite person from history? Coco Chanel.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given? “This too will pass”.
If you were a celebrity who would you be and why?
Not a big celebrity / gossip person, but maybe someone sexy and effortlessly cool like Jessica Alba, Eva Mendes.
Guilty pleasure? Massive bowls of popcorn late at night!
Fave film? I have a great love of all Disney films!
What was your impression of the world when you were growing up?
Pretty damn confusing.
Has the way you view the world changed?
I think once I decided what direction I wanted my life to take and started setting goals it all starting coming together and working piece by piece.
Do you think stylists should have a specific style?
Some do. I think if you have your niche, stick to it and work with it. Versatility can be good but if you are a Jill of all trades, you are master of none.
What is your strength and what is your weakness in business?
My weakness is possibly organisation, I’m resolved to the fact I’m too creative to be neat! My handbag is full of scribbled down notes and ideas, my laptop too with saved links and drafts and to-do lists all over the place. My strength though would be my marketing and PR skills learnt from previous jobs. I’m a lover of networking.
In 3 words describe your style.
Modern, embellished, stylish.
What is something quirky we don’t know about you?
I’m an avid black coffee drinker (read:daily) but never order it from cafe’s, it never tastes as good as the stuff I make at home.
Where would you like to live most in the world?
Right now, still Perth.
If the world was to end tomorrow what would you do?
Tell the people I love that I love them.
What advice would you offer emerging stylists?
Always stay honest and experience, experience, experience. Get as much as you can!
